On October 16 and 17, the GIAV Crop Tour provided an opportunity to see early yield estimates after a challenging start to the growing season.

South eastern Australia has experience four seasons with production well over the 10 year average, setting a high bar for the 2024 crop. These are some of the highest yields since tours commenced in the then record year of 2016.

Since 2016 the GIAV has hosted this 2-day Crop Tour which is established as a credible source of pre-harvest yield estimates of cereal crops in southeastern Australia as well as a valued networking event. Members and colleagues are invited to join us for our tour of grain growing regions in Victoria and the Riverina.

Attendance at crop tours can boost agronomic skills, generate first-hand knowledge of yield and production potential of wheat and barley crops in southern NSW and Victoria and provide valuable networking.

Our program suited to 30 to 60 participating crop scouts has been modelled on similar tours undertaken in the US and is suited to GIAV members, traders, millers, farmers, brokers, students and grain analysts.

Click here for a copy of the full results.

Logistics:

  • Bendigo is our start and end point and you can travel via car, train or transport can be arranged with a pick up/drop off from/to Melbourne Airport before and after the tour
  • We will meet in Bendigo at 5:30 on the Tuesday afternoon prior to the tour where a dinner briefing will acquaint crop scouts with crop estimating techniques, yield limiting features of grain and their tour groups
  • Surplus cars can be parked in Bendigo during the tour and collected on return Thursday afternoon
  • Participants will be assigned to a route and a travel group of 3 to 4 people to provide a mix of skills and experience within each car
  • Each car group will be able to inspect around 12 to 14 paddocks a day
  • Cars will leave from Bendigo on Wednesday and travel on different routes to three different towns
  • On Thursday reassigned groups will travel on different routes that will return to Bendigo
  • On Thursday evening there will be a post tour briefing and meal provided in Bendigo

Participants can return home by car or train from Bendigo

Assessment methods

  • A smart phone app is provided to all participants to record all the in-field data
  • Using tools provided, crop scouts will count grain heads/m of row and grains/head
  • Results from the specially developed app will be collated by the GIAV and results provided

Biosecurity

  • Boot hygiene protocol will be adopted (Plant Health Aust) with cars provided with kits
  • Without vehicles on paddocks the risk of pests/weed seeds spreading will be reduced

Materials, fees and registration

  • Training, accessing tools, maps of routes, wash kits and tour teams will be provided for each assessor
  • GIAV provides a meal for the briefing & reserves accommodation for participants to confirm and pay
  • Registration cost $310 or $260 for those who provide their car during the tour
  • Companies and individuals providing cars will also be acknowledged during the tour and when full results are revealed at the Pre-harvest meeting the following week

Easing of COVID guidelines https://giav.com.au/2020/06/easing-of-covid-guidelines/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=easing-of-covid-guidelines https://giav.com.au/2020/06/easing-of-covid-guidelines/#respond Tue, 16 Jun 2020 06:49:44 +0000 http://giav.com.local/?p=2200 The Victorian Government has set out a plan for the gradual easing of restrictions put in place to help slow the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). The first stage of this plan is already in place and I am writing to inform you that restrictions will soon be further eased for hospitality venues, auction houses and beauty and personal care services.

From 11.59pm on 21 June, cafes, restaurants and other hospitality businesses will be allowed to house up to 50 patrons per enclosed space. Groups of up to 20 people will also be allowed to dine in or drink together at the same table.

In addition, alcohol will be able to be served without a meal, but only when patrons are seated. Bars, pubs, clubs and strip clubs will be able to open for seated services only, provided tables are spaced 1.5 metres apart. Dance floors will remain closed.

Retail TABs and TAB facilities inside licensed premises may also reopen.

Auction houses may have up to 50 customers per venue and real estate auctions and inspections can take place with up to 50 people. The four square metre rule applies and patrons need to be kept at least 1.5 metres apart.

Beauty therapy, tanning, waxing, nail salons, spas, tattoo parlours and massage parlours may continue to operate with up to 20 patrons and no more than one person for every four square metres of space.

If staff have been working from home, they must continue to do so. Employers must support their staff to work from home if they can. If staff are required to be at the workplace, employers need to adhere to guidelines on physical distancing and increased cleaning. Actions employers can take to help reduce the risk of infection and slow the spread of coronavirus are available on the DHHS website.

The Victorian Government will continue to support businesses through the $1.7 billion Economic Survival Package including Working for Victoria, payroll tax refunds and the night-time economy business support initiative.

I encourage businesses seeking guidance on dealing with coronavirus (COVID-19) or further details on the support available to check the Business Victoria website business.vic.gov.au or call the Business Victoria hotline on 13 22 15.?

This is a challenging time and I thank you and your members for continuing to follow the directions of Victoria’s Chief Health Officer and the Department of Health and Human Services. As always, we’re urging Victorians to use common sense in their activities. It’s up to all of us to make this work.

Panellists discussed the crop outlook for SE Australia, including the declining production conditions in NSW, carry over stocks and possible new crop supplies

Lakeside

Production Outlook was much more significant given the massive shipping program and the realisation that cereal grain crops were not as big in the northern states. The morning panel of respected members provided a region-by-region review of grain, pulse and oilseed production outlook.

Crop pic

Looking back was the focus of our lunch time panel of members who reminded us of the tales and characters active in the grain trade in southern Australia during the recent portion of our 100 years of operation in this the 100th year of the GIAV/Melbourne Corn Exchange.

Stick shed long

Sponsors of our 2017 lunch were the NAB and members appreciated the economic update and discussion of sustainable farming and how it has future implications for rural financing. NAB

Election  Three members retired from the committee under normal GIAV rules (Michael Wood, Adrian Murphy, Andrew Kelso) and were eligible to renominate for the committee. All three retiring committee members renominated and their nominations were correctly received by the Secretary within the permitted time. As the number of nominations equalled the number of vacant committee positions, there was no need for an election and Andrew Kelso announced that all three nominees were declared appointed.

This is indeed a sad week for our Industry. As well as losing Bryce Bell,  many of you close to the barley and malting industries, and those involved with the GIAV for many years will be sad to hear that Barry Marshall finally succumbed to cancer last weekend on 21 June.

Simon McNair has written a fitting tribute to one of the true gentlemen of the industry, and this tribute is available from the above link.
